Ethical Fashion. Responsible Fabrics. Slow Fashion
Ethical consciousness is at the heart of everything The Joinery does.
We believe in being kind to the planet, transparent about our products and fair to our people.
The Joinery is a sustainable, ethical, fashion and lifestyle brand, striving for a high-end design aesthetic with an African conscience.
Our clothing, accessories and bespoke products are produced by sewing cooperatives, and artisans based in and around the townships of Cape Town. We strive to use organic, certified cotton, Tencel, Linen and Hemp fabrics where we can, and fibres that are grown without the use of toxic pesticides and synthetic fertilisers.
We work with suppliers that share our commitment to the environment by supporting practices that reduce their carbon footprint, opting for carbon-neutral or carbon-negative materials wherever possible. We are proudly conceptualising bespoke responsible fabrics made form 100% recycled plastic bottles. Saving plastic from landfill allows us to create beautiful, upcycled products and apparel.
We are proudly on the board of Fashion Revolution, encouraging consumers to ask: “Who made my clothes?”
Join us on our journey to create a sustainable lifestyle. Dress. Work. Live sustainably. Our manifesto is Do Something. Anything…

With The Joinery we work at improving what already exists by considering both the planet and the people involved. We believe in doing what we can, where we can. Don’t do nothing because you cant do everything, we believe.
Our name, The Joinery, speaks to our belief in collaboration and community. We believe in working together – with artists, designers and artisans – to create long-lasting, environmentally considerate pieces, while empowering communities by creating employment.
The Joinery is about rallying like-minded people who share our enthusiasm for creating, experimenting and finding solutions for sustainable fashion and products.
Meet the Makers
The partnerships we forge with the people that produce our products are an important part of our approach.
We are committed to working with local producers wherever possible as part of our vision for creating economic opportunities, thereby uplifting and empowering communities.
Working with artisans is also about preserving the legacy of craftsmanship that is constantly threatened by the proliferation of fast fashion.
By supporting local makers we ensure that the creativity, skills and expertise of these artisans live on.
We work with family run artisan workshops, sewing co operatives consisting of talented, women’s groups and local producers who believe in our ethos to create handcrafted pieces, thats tell an African story. We believe in ‘Africa by hand.’
